If the project you are working on can be easily separated into independent parallel computations, this approach would be perfect for you.

However, you have to use all-macintosh solution, which is also perfectly okay for biologists. Of course, if you check slashdot, there is still ways to use linux pc cluster and X-grid together, but it won't be trivial any time soon.
